1964 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 1964 was the second year of the second generation Corvette, (aka, C2). Gone was the split window and the hood vents although the recessed area where the vents were still remained. This generation also introduced independent rear suspension, which would remain on the car even to this day. The Sting Ray name also appeared with this generation. The love affair continues to this day with the Corvette, straight from the mind of ZORA ARKUS-DUNTOV. From Zora Arkus-Duntov's mind to your eyes, we offer up this C2 second year 1964 Stingray Roadster. This car comes with a body matching hardtop, and convertible soft top, and a period-correct engine. With the roadster design it leaves the pointed fastback behind, (literally), and offers up a bit of a classy look with its thin V shaped front and rear lines, and the split bumpers with hidden headlights. It's evident that this car has been pampered and likely hasn't seen a drop of rain in many years. Exterior Calypso Green painted fiberglass molded to an art form of rolling sculpture with its thin, V shaped, hidden headlight split bumper front and rear complete with the dual round inset tail lights, and more split bumpers below. The paint and chrome are show-worthy on this car and the color is spectacular. This car is equipped with a white canvas convertible top with a clear plastic window. A color matched hardtop also accompanies the car and is in excellent condition. For the soft top, no tonneau cover is necessary due to the hinged, flip up panel just before the rear deck that houses the entire folded down canvas top. Up front the hood is flanked by the hidden headlights. This works its way back to the passenger compartment which is framed up front with a curved windshield for a panoramic field of view. Vented stainless steel side pipe covers and the exhaust tips themselves fill the gap between the front and rear American Racing Torque Thrust wheels. The side gills are a breathtaking design feature and show well in this color. Interior Swing open the doors to reveal a vertical pattern in white vinyl split by a chrome trim piece, then a smooth bottom panel. All the white is offset by chrome window cranks, sliding knob for a door actuator, and two jet-age reflectors. White vinyl low back buckets are flanking a center armrest which sits behind a chrome edged center console. This houses a cue ball styled handle on a Hurst shifter, then the console climbs straight up to house a side mounted factory AM/FM stereo, various knobs and pulls and large chrome bezel black faced clock. Both sides split gracefully to their respective corners of the dash, but first take an opportunity to form 2 graceful cowls, one for the glovebox, and the other for the gauge cluster. Both have a black faux leather textured vinyl background which is very clean, with the glovebox having a silver door. The faux wood rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel has a crossed flag center badge. Factory appearing black loop carpet covers the floors protected by black carpeted mats. The trunk carries over the loop carpet and is completely covered and clean. Drivetrain A flip of the forward-facing hinged hood, and we are met with a nicely restored engine bay. If you thought the exterior and interior were the stars, those were only the first two opening acts. An orange/red painted block and ribbed aluminum valve covers, correctly matte black hoses, and spotless exhaust manifolds all meld perfectly in this showcase of an American legend. A period correct 327ci V8 is topped by a 4-barrel carburetor working together to send power to the peroid correct Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. 3.70 gears are reserved for the back axle with positraction. Disc and drum brakes are here, front and rear respectively. Undercarriage Very gracefully aged straight rust-free black steel makes up the undercarriage and has obviously been well cared for over the years. Exhaust piping is quickly routed away from the engine and follows through the frame to the side of the car and in absolute epic fashion, run below the doors and exit just in front of the back tires. Independent coil spring front suspension and transverse leaf springs on the rear are noted sitting within this excellent environment. All very nicely preserved environment, clean, dry and likely never seeing rain or bad weather! Drive-Ability Cooler temps meant we kept the top up for our short stint around the test loop, but we know how fun these are with the top down. Not too shabby with the lid up however, as the 327 roared across our flat track with a glorious cacophony of exhaust notes from the side pipes. You tailpipe owners are really missing out! Anyway, the car ran strong, pulled hard, and shifted smoothly as we babied it through the turns and runway home. There are even terrific features like power windows and a color-matched hardtop. But the real appeal of this one is one of the most unique tales you may ever find. Al Segelhorst led quite an interesting life. In the early 1960s he traveled quite a bit working for Hughes (Raytheon) working on the lunar program fueled by The Space Race. Young, single, and based in Spain, Al treated himself to a new 1964 Corvette in the summer of 1963. While getting in line for the new Chevy model year is somewhat easy in the USA, it takes a little more planning when doing it from Europe. So we have a very cool file with the order from the dealer in Zaragoza, Spain, and the later correspondence trying to figure out if the car would meet Al in Spain, Germany, or wherever his next destination was. It was eventually settled that his father would pick up the car from the St. Louis dealership that handled factory delivery (only four miles from the plant.) Al later took delivery of the car, and his son even says it likely went with him to locations like Puerto Rico and Australia. So you know you love this unique Sting Ray before you even look at the details. Satin Silver was a new color offered in 1964, and Al took plenty of steps to make sure it continues to look good. This included keeping the car under a cover in storage for many years once it was back in the USA. Al\'s son said it only came out for special occasions, and that his father had it painted in the 1980s (it took three times for the painter to meet Al\'s standards.) So today the finish continues to have an impressive shine to show off the clean and well-respected lines of this C2. And with brightwork this complete, you can drive this one just as proudly as Al did. In fact, when his son inherited the car in 2006 and it was solid to subsequent collectors, we have a document file showing the right investments in keeping this in proper running order. And any additions or replacements over the years have only been about keeping this looking period-correct like replacing the soft top (2021) and the addition of knock-off style wheels. Not only does the white convertible top look elegant against the silver, but when you take it down there\'s the same sophistication from the white interior. It\'s a color combo we don\'t see too often, and so it adds to the car\'s distinction. We can understand why Al would want a Sting Ray in all his different world travels because this car rewarded true drivers with features like bucket seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, full gauges, and a bright shifter calling out to your right hand. It remains attractive inside for how stock everything is. There are plenty of companies that provide quality replacements for any component that you may want to update, but what we particularly like is how the originality also shows off the rare options for this coupe. This includes white leather seats, power windows, and a color-matched hardtop. Even the Delco AM/FM radio is still cranking out tunes. Under the hood is Chevy\'s famous 327 cubic-inch V8. It looks quite correct with the bright orange block, callout valve covers, and polished air topper as well as the distributor shield. This is the numbers-matching unit, which means even more in a car with this kind of history. In fact, we especially like how this one is presented today. It has been maintained well so that original items like the number-matching four-speed continue to shift smoothly. And items that never last the long haul were replaced -- like the dual exhaust and tires. It makes for a solid running package, and the power steering, power brakes, and the Corvette\'s fully independent suspension deliver a solid total driving attitude. But if you dig just a little deeper, you can also see this has been enhanced for added power with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and an Edelbrock aluminum intake. This V8 fires up readily like a well-respected classic that wants to hit the road. And we love the added rumble that comes from the updated baffled dual exhaust. And you are in complete control of both the power and soundtrack thanks to the numbers-matching four-speed manual transmission. The fully-independent suspension was a hallmark feature for being a rare find on a 1960s classic. And there\'s also power steering and power brakes to make it an all-around solid cruiser.
